Ms. Hunter's Art Classes-WINTER 2005

Seeing Flatly

WARM UP:
Do three contour drawings of a figure in different poses.

SEEING FLATLY

Key Concepts:
line- outline, edges, connecting broken lines and edges
simple shapes
overlapping shapes

HOW TO...

Step 1: Look at the edge of the figure you are trying to draw. Find one big simple shape (a circle, oval, triangle, etc.).

Step 2: Look again and find one or two smaller shapes inside of the first shape. If the shapes overlap, just draw the lines right through each other.

Step 3: Continue to find smaller shapes.

Step 4: Refine your lines.

All of your lines should be drawn VERY LIGHLTY.

ASSIGNMENT

1. Study the examples given.
2. Practice- draw over the figure in the handouts.
3. Work from direct observation (have someone model for you).
Draw them in 3 different poses.

Note:
Some poses are better (more interesting) than others.
The pose your model takes should be comfortable for them because they will have to hold it.

REMINDERS
Keep your lines VERY LIGHT.
Use the whole page in your DWB.
Look at the model carefully.
NO erasers!
