Personalize your Visit

Articulation: Learning to Look at Art

Choose one (1) of the following focus areas to write about during/ after your visit:
 
FOCUS AREA ONE- Analysis of one specific artwork
1. Select one artwork from the exhibition for analysis.  Your analysis should include the following steps:
 
Describe-what you see (the Elements, subject matter, medium)
Analyse-how the work is organized (Principles)
Interpret- what is the artwork about
Judge-how successful is the artwork
 
2. Personalize your analysis
What was new or interesting about this artwork?  What connections are you able to make between this artwork and your own? 
FOCUS AREA TWO- Analysis of the body of work/ exhibition
1. Provide an analysis of the exhibition as a whole:
Describe-the artist(s), how many artworks, type of artworks, size/ scale of artworks,
Analyze-connections found among the work (ie. thematic, visual, media, artists context, etc.)
Interpret-
Judge-
 
2. Personalize your analysis
FOCUS AREA THREE- Examination of the artist or group of artists in the exhibition
1.  Biographical information
-when and where did this/ these artist(s) work?
-style?
-
 
2. Personalize your research
FOCUS AREA FOUR- The Gallery or Museum
1.
-the location of the gallery/ exhibition space
-the type of gallery/ museum- its purposes or mandate
-the type of exhibition (permanent/ temporary; group show/ solo)
-the exhibition space
-the types of objects on display
-display/ presentation techniques (ie. height of the work, frames/ mats/ mounts, display information, etc.)
 
2. Personalize your visit
What ideas does this give you about your own exhibition?

During your visit be sure to collect pamphlets or brochures of the exhibition/ gallery and put them in your workbook along with your write-up.
