QUESTIONS TO START THINKING ABOUT

ALTER-EGOS
What is an alter-ego?
What are different roles an alter-ego can assume?
Why might a visual artist create an alter-ego in a work of art?

YOUR LIFE AND CULTURAL CONTEXT
Where do you live? (neighborhood, city, region, country)
Do you feel like you belong here? Why or why not?
Would you rather be somewhere else? Where? Why?
How have this place, and people, changed over time?
What is daily life like in this place?
Do you look at your surroundings with optimism or pessimism? With hope, dread or fear?
Where do you see tragedy or injustice? What are the niceties or pleasantries of this place? Do you ever feel wonder or awe in this place? Do you laugh at this place?
Who are the victims of our society? Who are the outsiders in our society?
Who are the people you envy, laugh at, pity or fear in our society?
Who are the heroes/ heroines in our society?

YOUR ALTER-EGO
What are your own personal weaknesses and/ or strengths?
How will your alter-ego be different or similar to you?
Will your alter-ego be tragic, heroic, comedic or sinister?
What special powers, characteristics, strengths or weaknesses will he or she have?
How might he or she have acquired these qualities?
Does your alter-ego have any mutations? If so, what are they? How did they occur?
Are you a fusion of a human being with other elements? (such as fire/ animal/mineral/plant, etc.)
Is your alter-ego inspired by or related to a mythological figure?
What is your origin myth? (Tell a brief story of how your alter-ego came into being.)
How did your alter-ego's life history affect his or her psychological make up and outlook on life?
What might he or she look like?
What would his or her name be?
What kind of costume would he or she wear?
Would he or she have an archenemy or a sidekick? A love interest?
What does your alter-ego stand for?

When your alter-ego is resting or deep in thought, to what place does s/he retreat? A mountaintop overlooking the city? An abandoned warehouse? A famous monument?
What concerns does your alter-ego have in relation to his or her powers or special qualities?
Does your alter-ego worry that his or her deeds are too intrusive on the lives of the humans he or she helps? Does your alter-ego feel the weight of responsibility for others?
What Big Questions tend to haunt your alter-ego?
Are there aspects of the Big Questions that make them too complex to answer simply?
Does trying to answer the Big Questions create more questions?
Does your alter-ego worry about the same issues that you do?
Does your alter-ego have a moral weakness?
