b. What are some of the ways in which photography influenced other art forms?
c. How were Daumier and Manet influenced by early photographs?
Collect examples of their work.
d. What link has often been made between Impressionist work such, 'Boulevard Montmartre' and photography?
Collect this image.
e. What were some of the ways in which Degas was influenced by photography? Collect examples of Degas' work
as well as that of Muybridge.
2. THE CRISIS OF REPRESENTATION
f. Why did the painting of realistic pictures become obsolete from the second half of the 19th century?
3. PAINTING AT THE TURN OF THE CENTURY
g. What effects did the Impressionists try to capture in their paintings? Besides the invention of photography,
what other scientific discoveries influenced their work? In what type of subject matter were they interested? Where did
they work on many of their paintings?
Collect an Impressionist painting by Monet.
h. Artists such as Pissarro and Seurat were very influenced by Impressionism. What related style did they develop?
Briefly explain this method of working.
Collect an artwork by one of these artists that demonstrates this style.
i. What problem did Paul Cezanne have with Impressionism? What difficulty did Cezanne have with traditional perspective?
How did he solve this problem in his painting?
Collect Mont Sainte-Victoire.
j. Van Gogh, Gauguin and Post-Impressionism
What culture's artwork inspired Van Gogh? What did he admire about this artwork? While the Impressionists used
colour to represent the effects of light on objects, how did the Post-Impressionists use colour?
Collect a Post-Impressionist artwork by Van Gogh or Gauguin.
k. Choose one of the following movements:
Expressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism (and Matisse), Northern Expressionism, Cubism (and Picasso)
