Early Pottery (Prehistory and Ancient)

Find out:

1. What handbuilding technique was used in Japan during the Jomon period? How was texture added to the pots? Were these pots functional or non-functional?

2. Where was the first glaze discovered? When?

3. In around 4000 BC, the first cities in the MIddle East wrote on slabs of clay. What type of information did they record? Why do you think that they might have used clay?

4. What clues do you see on Minoan pottery that would indicate that this culture lived by the sea?

5. What type of subject matter do we find on Greek vases?

6. Which cultures created life-sized ceramic sculptures? Who buried them with their dead? Why?

7. What kinds of innovations were the Ancient Romans able to bring to Northern Europe?

Collect:

3 pieces of pottery from the early section of the timeline.
Copy/ print and glue into your DWB.
