Ms. Hunter's Art Classes-WINTER 2005

The Frames

Subjective Frame

Artists may work strongly from their own experiences, imaginings, feelings and pychological experience.
Critics and art historians may include judgements, opinions and explanations stated from a personal viepoint, often using emotive language.

Structural Frame

Strong emphasis is placed on process and development of symbols- the visual language used by the artist to communicate.
Critics'/ historians' explanations of working methods or media and the communication of meaning.

Cultural Frame

The social meaning of artworks- as expressions, for example, of culture, class, gender, ideology, beliefs and politics- is covered.
The concern of the critic or historian for the significance of the artwork to these issues, or as a reflection of a particular time and place (culture), is indicated.

Postmodern Frame

The artist's challenging of traditions and mainstream ideas is apparent- new media, new forms of display, appropriation, patiche, parody or irony.
The challenging by critics and historians of accepted notions of art and art history. There is a re-evaluation of meaning and ideas, often cynical in approach, challenging the concept of the artist genius and the masterpiece and the 'truth' as written in history and offering new interpretations.
